Portrait of Marchesa Casati

The Marquise Luisa Casati with Peacock Feathers (Italian: La marchesa Luisa Casati con penne di pavone) is an oil painting on canvas (130 × 176 cm) by the Italian painter Giovanni Boldini. Dated 1911-1913, it is held at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome. Aristocrat, patron of the arts and collector, the Marquise Luisa Casati left her mark on her time with her eccentricities and femme fatale looks. She gave grand masked balls attended by the European elite and avant-garde artists, appearing with cheetahs on a leash or adorned with live snakes as jewellery. From Boldini to Man Ray, via Gabriele D'Annunzio, Kees van Dongen and Adolf de Meyer, numerous painters and photographers have captured her image and contributed to making her a veritable myth. The "divine", as Boldini called her in his correspondence, was one of his favourite models. Between 1911 and 1913, Boldini returned several times to his large portrait of the Marquise, without ever considering it finished. The daring pose of the model and the many brushstrokes swirling around her accentuate the impression of movement and dizziness, recalling the Futurist painters' research into the multiplication of the body in [...]
