Several Circles, 1926

Alcuni cerchi (Some Circles), known in English as Several Circles and in German as Einige Kreise (Some Circles), is a work by Vassily Kandinsky executed between January and February 1926. This oil painting on canvas, measuring 140.3x140.7 cm, is kept at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in the United States of America. The work bears the museum's inventory number 41 283. Influenced by the Bauhaus, Constructivism and Suprematism before abstractionism, Kandinsky produced a study of shapes and colours and their relationships. On the black canvas, the shades of which harmoniously follow the coloured figures, circles stand out that seem to float in the void, reminiscent of the planets that gravitate in the universe according to the laws of mutual gravitational attraction: some are more isolated than others, which on the contrary form more coherent clusters. The superimposition of the blue circle, which predominates over the others in terms of size, on a white circle with shaded contours is reminiscent of lunar eclipses: by using geometric shapes and colours, Kandinsky created a work that appeals to the senses as much as to the eye. The black circle inside the blue circle echoes other smaller circles of the same colour that dot the whole work. The colours are as if transparent, and the painting shows extraordinary skill on the part of the painter in representing the tonal variations of the 'circle planets', which overlap and eclipse each other without completely [...]
