The Crowning with Thorns

The Coronation of Thorns is a painting by Caravaggio that dates from the early 17th century (probably around 1602-1603) and is held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria. There is another version of the same theme, probably by the same artist, which is also thought to date from around 1602 or 1603 and is kept in Prato. Since its rediscovery by Roberto Longhi in the 20th century, there has been little difficulty in attributing the painting to Caravaggio. Despite some doubts over the years, notably on the part of the curators of the Kunsthistorisches Museum themselves, the attribution to Caravaggio is now hardly contested[a]. On the other hand, many questions remain unanswered as to the exact date of its creation, which ranges from 1599 for some authors to 1607 for others"; nevertheless, most specialists agree on a more likely dating of 1602 to 1603, or even 1604. " This painting was commissioned by Vincenzo Giustiniani, Caravaggio's patron at the time"; it remained in the possession of the Giustiniani family until 1809. On that date, it was purchased by the Austrian ambassador to the Vatican on behalf of Francis I of Austria. Legal problems delayed its export, but in 1816 the Coronation finally arrived in Vienna, where it has remained ever since."
