The Resurrection
The Resurrection (La Resurrezione) is a work by Piero della Francesca, painted between 1463 and 1465. Measuring 2.25 x 2.00 m, it can still be seen in the very place where it was created: one of the walls of what is now the Museo Civico di Sansepolcro, which was the sala magna of the Residenza, where the Council held its meetings.
It is a fresco with tempera additions. After a three-year restoration period, the work can be seen again from March 2018.
Jesus, after his death on the Cross and burial, is seen emerging from his tomb or sarcophagus, sleeping soldiers are lying around (they may be awake and surprised by the apparition), Mount Golgotha of his torture can be seen with the three crosses. Christ appears in bust form or rises into the air bearing his banner. Angels may be present to witness the scene.
The standing Christ, emerging from the tomb, faces the viewer, carrying the standard of the Resurrection, white with a red cross (that of the Crusaders).
With his hand raising the pink toga and his foot resting on the edge of the tomb, all his wounds are visible.
Christ is surrounded by trees on either side of a hilly landscape. The two tree trunks and the staff of the banner form a vertical grid; the line passing through the staff crosses the horizontal line at the top of the sarcophagus, through the head of the soldier leaning against it.
The soldiers sleeping on the ground are separated from Christ by the horizontal line of the sarcophagus.
