Vase of Peonies on a Pedestal is an oil on canvas (93.2×70.2 cm) by the French painter Édouard Manet, painted in 1864 and now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The still life genre enjoyed great popularity in the 1860s, and was frequented by artists such as Fantin-Latour, Degas, Monet and Renoir. Still lifes took on even greater importance in the work of Manet, an artist who, outraged by history painting and all those "great machines", went so far as to say: Manet's still lifes were indeed much admired by the critics, who, by contrast, gave a rather cold reception to the rest of the master's works, first and foremost Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe and Olympia. Even Van Gogh, an artist who also devoted himself to floral still lifes, greatly admired The Vase of Peonies on a Pedestal and praised its refined colour texture and soft, vigorous brushwork. However, unlike other artists of the time, Manet had a natural predilection for flowers with large corollas and fleshy petals, those that - in short - could easily occupy the entire surface of the painting. This painting shows a bouquet of peonies, a highly prized floral species recently imported from the Orient. The bouquet is housed in a small decorated ceramic vase, typical of the Napoleon III period, and features flowers with petals of different colours, from white to purplish red.
