A Corner of the Garden at Montgeron
Garden Corner at Montgeron is an oil on canvas by the French Impressionist painter Claude Monet, now in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. It measures 175 × 194 cm and dates from 1876.
This large canvas depicts a flower-filled garden corner with rosebushes in the foreground, in front of a pond, in the garden of the Château de Rottembourg in Montgeron, near Paris. The property belonged at the time to Ernest Hoschedé, who invited Monet there during the summer and autumn to paint large canvases for his rotunda salon. The following year, the wealthy patron went bankrupt and the paintings never made it back to Montgeron, as the property was sold. This painting was bought in 1907 by the wealthy Moscow collector Ivan Morozov. His collection was nationalised by the Bolsheviks. It is now part of the Hermitage Museum collection under inventory number ??-9152.
