Above the Eternal Peace
"Summer (in Italian l'Estate) is a painting by the Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo (Italian: Giuseppe Arcimboldo; 1527-1593), created in 1573. Oil on canvas. Held in the Louvre. Size - 76 × 64 cm."
"Summer" - one of four paintings in the cycle "The Seasons" ("Spring", "Summer", "Autumn", "Winter"). The four portraits represent the stages of human life - youth, youth, maturity and old age. The allegorical summer portrait symbolises youth. The colouring of the painting is warm due to the abundance of red, orange, pink and light yellow fruit. The painting shows a woman wearing a blouse made of wheat straw. Her face is painted in profile against a dark, saturated background. The blouse is decorated with ears of wheat and an artichoke. The artist has inscribed his name in the weave of the blouse: "GIUSEPPE ARCIMBOLDO - F", where "F" stands for Italian. Fecit - executed. On the shoulder, the date is "1573". This is how Arcimboldo marked his later copies. The woman's face, like a strange mosaic, is assembled from fruit and vegetables. The nose is replaced by a green cucumber, the cheeks are made from quince, peach and garlic, the ear is made from an ear of corn, red cherries and grapes have been transformed into lips, the eye is a black cherry, a ripe ear of corn has replaced the eyebrow, and a pea pod represents the teeth.
