Adoration of the baby

The Adoration of the Child is a painting by the Dutch painter Gerard van Honthorst, executed around 1619-1620 and housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The painting is one of five by Honthorst in the Uffizi, all of them in the tenebrista style that explains why he is known in Italy as Gherardo delle Notti or Gerard of the Night. We can assume that they were all bought in 1628 by Ferdinand II de' Medici, of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, who had just returned from a trip to Northern Europe and sent an intermediary to investigate "6 paintings" that were for sale in Rome. The Adoration of the Child shows a moonlit scene with the Virgin Mary laying the baby in swaddling clothes. Saint Joseph looks over Mary's shoulder at the child, and the two angels bow towards the cradle. The moonlight is reflected so brightly on the faces that the baby Jesus is the source of the light. The painting is reminiscent of earlier versions of this theme, such as the Nativity of Jesus by Geertgen tot Sint Jans.
