Agnus Dei

Agnus Dei is a painting by Francisco de Zurbarán housed in the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain. This oil on canvas, produced between 1635 and 1640, is 38 cm high and 62 cm wide. Francisco de Zurbarán produced six versions of the painting, which differ little from one another. The Catalan government has declared his version to be a "property of national interest". It bears an inscription from the Acts of the Apostles 8:32, which, translated into French, reads: "Like a sheep, he was led to the slaughter; like a lamb mute before the shearer, he opened not his mouth". The treatment is highly naturalistic, the legs are tied". This is the most finished version. It is on display in the permanent exhibition at the Prado Museum in Madrid. This version is also known as the "Sheep with Tied Legs", on display in Barcelona in the Salvado Plandiura collection.
