"Houses in Unterach am Attersee" (German: Häuser in Unterach am Attersee) is a 1916 painting by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt. Unterach am Attersee is an Austrian village in the south-western part of Upper Austria, in the Salzkammergut region, on the southern shore of Lake Attersee. Gustav Klimt spent many summers at Attersee, which became a popular holiday destination for the Viennese bourgeoisie after the imperial court made Bad Ischl its summer residence. Klimt painted more than fifty landscapes on the Utterse.
The painting is in a private collection. After being returned, along with four other works by Gustav Klimt, to the Bloch-Bauer heiress Maria Altman, it was sold at a Christie's auction for $31.376 million (€24.6 million) to a certain lady in the auction room.
Klimt's House at Untersee depicts a small part of the city on the shores of a lake. The painting highlights the bright red façade of the house, which is partially hidden on either side by tall trees. To the left of the lakeside house, a small dark red building is depicted with the colour supporting the previous façade. On the hillside, a large yellow building completes the composition of the painting. There is no light source and nothing in the painting casts shadows. Most of the time, the colours in the landscape are muted and somewhat blurred.
In this urban landscape, there is almost no division into planes, and the perspective is upwards, not into the depth of the image. Although the terrain is hilly, [...]
