Angel of Annunciation

The Annunciation of Recanati is an oil-on-canvas painting by Lorenzo Lotto dating from 1528, housed in the Museo Civico Villa Colloredo Mels in Recanati. Dating from the end of the painter's Venetian period, during which he worked in the Marche region, the painting was commissioned by the Confraternita dei mercanti di Recanati. The Annunciation to Mary is one of the most widespread themes in Christian iconography: Mary (the Annunciation) is surprised in her reading, at home, near her bedroom, by the arrival of the Archangel Gabriel (the announcing angel); "she learns that she is going to give birth to the future Christ". There are several possible attitudes for the Virgin: here Mary is frightened and clearly expresses this feeling";Other attributes are necessary to represent the event: The presence of God the Father from heaven, the dove of the Holy Spirit, the walled garden (the hortus conclusus symbol of virginity)." Mary, frightened, stands on the left of the composition, turning her back on her interrupted reading, from her bedroom, where we can see clothes on a coat hook, a shelf, a candlestick, the canopy of the bed, an hourglass on a stool"; she shows her surprise by opening her hands wide, looking towards the viewer. " On the right, the Archangel Gabriel, carrying a sprig of lilies and with his hair still cloudy from his flight, raises one arm to heaven, overlooking God the Father, who appears in the heavens, covered by the portico that marks the boundary of the [...]
