Saint Thomas with a Spade is an oil painting on canvas by Georges de La Tour, dated around 1620-1635. Depicting Saint Thomas, this painting aims to offer a synthetic vision of the apostle's life through his attributes and a realistic treatment of his features. The reduced palette and treatment of light allow the viewer to identify with the painting and to reflect on it. The figure is treated very realistically, with visible veins and detailed wrinkles, eyes sunken in their sockets, and calloused and deformed hands. La Tour has also taken care to depict the wear and tear of the clothes and the battered book, giving Saint Thomas a rugged look that he shares with the Albi apostles.
