At the Eden Concert

A Sunday Afternoon on the Ile de la Grande Jatte is a painting by Georges Seurat, exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago. Seurat painted this picture between May 1884 - March 1885 and October 1885 - May 1886 on the Île de la Grande Jatte, now called Île de la Jatte, situated on the Seine between Neuilly-sur-Seine and Levallois-Perret on the right bank, and Courbevoie and the La Défense business district on the left bank. It was made famous by the Impressionist painters it inspired, in particular Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and Alfred Sisley, and of course its painter Seurat. This painting was exhibited at the eighth Impressionist exhibition in 1886. This large-format painting is characterised by cool tones and a technique of dividing the brushstrokes, commonly known as pointillism. Seurat establishes differences in planes by distributing two large areas of light and shadow, but maintains the same chromatic intensity throughout the space. Note that Seurat also painted the frame of his painting, using his Divisionist technique. The painting makes an appearance in Ferris Bueller's film La Folle Journée. Seurat himself depicted part of the painting in a later canvas, Les Poseuses. Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (libretto and direction) created the musical Sunday in the Park with George, based on the painting.
