Bather about to plunge into the River L'Yerres
Bathers preparing to dive, or Baigneurs, bord de l'Yerres, is a painting by Gustave Caillebotte produced in 1878. It is in a private collection.
This large canvas, measuring 157 × 117 cm, shows a bather from the back in a dark blue bathing costume edged in red, preparing to dive into the Yerres, near the family estate, in summer. Another bather coming out of the water is looking at him, as is another in the water. In the background, a rowing boatman approaches from the back, paddling. Gustave Caillebotte used to spend his summers with his family in Yerres, some twenty kilometres south of Paris, and this is the subject of several paintings, including, this summer in 1878, the famous The Orange Trees, kept at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, or The Fisherman on the banks of the Yerres (Rennes Museum of Fine Arts). Along with the Bather and around twenty other works by Caillebotte, they were presented at the fourth Impressionist exhibition from 10 April to 10 May 1879. Other versions of Le Baigneur s'apprêtant à plonger are in private collections.
For the artist (who turned 30 on 19 August), this was the last happy summer in Yerres, as his mother died in Paris on 20 October 1878 and the property was sold on 17 June [...]
