Cape Cod Evening
Cape Cod Evening (in French, Soir à Cap Cod or Un soir d'été à Cape Cod) is an oil-on-canvas painting by the American artist Edward Hopper, painted in 1939 and preserved since it was donated by the John Hay Whitney Charitable Trust to the National Gallery of Art in Washington (District of Columbia) in 1982.
Completed on 30 July 1939 in Truro, the painting should have been called Whipporwill, birds in fact not visible in the trees (left)"; these trees "adopt a phalanx formation, gradually increasing with darkness". Another version indicates that the painting was to have been called The Seagull: "The dog is listening to something, probably a seagull or some evening noise", Hopper explained in an interview;This work has no real model, it is a composition of several sketches or inspirations by the painter; his studies show that the creation went through several stages, with at the beginning only the dog looking at the woman. Although it does not represent anything existing, this painting is still considered to be the most important of Hopper's Cape Cod paintings".
Evening on Cape Cod is more explicit, with two figures on the doorstep of their house"; even though the two humans are not the main subject of the work, the vision is diverted towards an unknown and invisible element, outside the painting. The house is seen only through its façade, with its bow window, its door with its moulded frame and canopy, and a window on the far right of the composition that catches the bluish [...]
