Chez la modiste is a pastel on paper by the French painter Edgar Degas. The work dates from 1882 and is currently in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The pastel measures 70.2 x 70.5 cm. Degas, who considered himself a realist, liked to depict everyday things in his paintings. He therefore drew a great deal of inspiration from his life as an aristocratic Parisian and that of his friends.
