Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow
Composition with large red, yellow, black, grey and blue plane is a 1921 non-figurative geometric abstract painting by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. The painting is in the Museum of Art in The Hague.
The painting was bought in 1921 by Jo Steijling, a Dutch acquaintance who had visited the painter in Paris. This sale gave the painter enough confidence to rent a more expensive studio in the rue du Départ.
This is an oil painting on canvas measuring 59.5 × 59.5 cm. An abstract composition corresponding to neoplasticism, it consists of several rectangles and two squares (basic geometric shapes) separated by horizontal and vertical black lines. The work is rigorously structured: the vertical and horizontal lines intersect at right angles, forming rectangles that may or may not be filled with solid primary colours (red, blue, yellow) or so-called anti-colours (white, black and grey).
With a grid motif made up of lines and coloured areas, Mondrian focused on structure, on the opposition of vertical and horizontal to achieve balance. He concentrated on the relationship between the figure and the background against which it appeared.
The focus is on the beauty of the lines, the colours and the relationships between them. The primary colours order physical reality. Each rectangle constitutes a static module.
