Der Blaue Reiter
The Blue Rider (in German: Der Blaue Reiter) is an oil painting on canvas (55×60 cm) produced in 1903 by the painter Vassily Kandinsky. It is part of a private collection in Zurich.
The painting depicts a knight, dressed in blue and mounted on a white horse, riding rapidly up a green-gold hill. The hill is bordered by a gently curving line running down from right to left, against which trees with yellowing leaves stand out, a clear sign that we are in the middle of the autumn season.
The technique used by Kandinsky is still very close to Impressionism.
For this painting, Kandinsky was inspired by the legends and fairy tales of the German Middle Ages and by the Russian folk tradition, in which he had developed a great interest. In particular, the artist was fascinated by the figure of the knights who, in order to fight evil, faced the most arduous trials and the most frightening dangers: they are thus the symbol of the struggle between good and evil, the battle of the spirit against materialism. The title of this painting was reused by Kandinsky and Franz Marc as the name of the group they founded: Der Blaue [...]
