Mona Lisa (Italian: La Gioconda [la d?o?konda] or Mona Lisa [?m?nna ?li?za]), or Portrait of Mona Lisa, is a painting by the artist Leonardo da Vinci, produced between 1503 and 1506 or between 1513 and 1516,, and possibly until 1519 (the artist died that year, on 2 May), depicting a half-body portrait, probably of the Florentine Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo. Acquired by François I, this 77 × 53 cm oil painting on poplar panel is on display at the Musée du Louvre in Paris. The Mona Lisa is one of the few paintings attributed with certainty to Leonardo da Vinci.
The Mona Lisa has become an eminently famous painting because, since its creation, many artists have used it as a reference. During the Romantic period, artists were fascinated by the painting and helped to develop the myth surrounding it, making it one of the most famous works of art in the world, if not the most famous: it is in any case considered to be one of the most famous representations of a female face in the world. In the 21st century, it has become the most visited work of art in the world, ahead of the Hope diamond, with 20,000 visitors coming to admire and photograph it every day.
The Mona Lisa is a portrait of a young woman, set against a mountainous landscape with distant, misty horizons. She is in a three-quarter view, depicted from the waist up, including her arms and hands, looking at the viewer.
