Draperie enveloppant les jambes d'une figure assise
Étude pour le drapé de la Vierge (Study for the Draping of the Virgin) is a drawing by the Florentine painter Leonardo da Vinci, held in the Graphic Arts Department of the Musée du Louvre. It is executed in charcoal, Indian ink and grey wash, with highlights of ceruse white on yellowed, black-tinted paper.
Probably created between 1507 and 1510 - although some scholars put the date back to 1516-1517 - the drawing is a preparatory study for the drapery of the Virgin Mary's cloak in the painting Sainte Anne, la Vierge et l'Enfant Jésus jouant avec un agneau (Saint Anne, the Virgin and the Child Jesus Playing with a Lamb) in the Musée du Louvre. It is one of a series of studies dating from well after the painting began in 1502-1503, each devoted to a particular detail. Two of them deal specifically with parts of the drapery - the fabric on the figure's right thigh and the fall of the piece of fabric on the figure's hip. As the motif described is quite different from the painting, but can be found in studio copies, the researchers see this work as an argument in favour of the theory that these copies are life-size prototypes of the painting in the Louvre.
The drawing is distinguished by the multiplicity of materials used and the complexity of the technique, which are deployed to the benefit of a work of great finesse. In fact, the drawing for the Study for the Draping of the Virgin bears witness to the development of the painter's technical mastery from the outset.
