Dynamisme d'un cycliste
Dynamism of a cyclist (Dinamismo di un ciclista), is a 1913 painting by the Italian Futurist artist Umberto Boccioni that reflects the Futurist interest in speed, modern methods of transport, and the representation of the dynamic sensation of movement.
Futurism was an artistic movement that emerged in Italy at the beginning of the 20th century and aimed to free the country from the weight of its classical past. Futurists were concerned with technology and the dynamism of modern life. The movement found expression mainly in literature and art.
Although the bicycle was invented in the early 19th century, it was not widely used until the 1890s. Even in 1913, the bicycle and the high speeds it could achieve still represented for the Futurists one of the modern forms of transport they idealised.
Boccioni's preparatory drawings for this painting (two of which are shown below) depict a cyclist with his head down and his rear raised, his movement indicated by the Futurist features of "lines of force" and echo curves. Lines of force, which the Futurists claim to have invented, show how an object would become if it followed the tendencies of its own forces and reflect the Futurists' interest in the philosophy of Henri Bergson, who believed that material objects exist in a state of continual flux.
The painting is therefore an attempt to represent the dynamic sensation of a cyclist moving through time and space, rather than a snapshot of a particular moment in time.
