Evening Reverie
"The Caliph of Constantine", or "Ali Ben-Hamet, Caliph of Constantine, Chief of the Haractas, followed by his escort", is an 1845 painting by the French artist Théodore Chasseriault. It is part of the collection of the Château de Versailles in France. The equestrian portrait depicts Ali Ben-Hamet, the chief of the Haractas tribe, who invited Théodore Chasseriault on his visit to Paris. The painting was shown at the 1845 Paris Salon alongside an equestrian portrait by Eugène Delacroix, The Sultan of Morocco. This painting is a good illustration of Chasseriot's "passion for colour and movement" at the time.
It has been accused of "blind imitation of Delacroix's art", although it has been described as "full of grandeur and majesty". It also lacks scientific rigour and misrepresents the limbs of the horse in the [...]
