Execution without trial under the Moorish kings of Granada was painted by Henri Regnault in 1870. It is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The painting was one of three that Regnault, who won the Grand Prix de Rome, was contracted to send during his three-year stay at the Académie de Rome to be exhibited at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where it was finally shown in 1872, posthumously, since the artist died in January 1871. In the meantime, because of the war, the painting was sent to London to the gallery owner Durant-Ruel, who represented the artist. The State subsequently acquired the painting from the heirs, and it was transferred to the Musée du Luxembourg. The theme here is inspired by a legend dating back to the time of Al-Andalus, the "Massacre of the Abencérages". The choice of format is rather unusual (3.05 m high by 1.46 m wide). It is set against an architectural background borrowed from the Alhambra in Granada, where the painter had stayed before moving temporarily to Tangiers, where he had bought a house. Théophile Gautier, among others, admired this painting. Regnault saw this painting as the beginning of a cycle: he was preparing Le Triomphe de l'Islam (The Triumph of Islam), a canvas that was to be six metres long and still in the sketch [...]
