Les Footballeurs is a series of around fifteen oil paintings on canvas or cardboard by Nicolas de Staël, painted in Paris in 1952.
Some of the paintings in the series are entitled Le Parc des Princes: les footballeurs, and others Les Footballeurs (Parc des princes). But the painting Le Parc des Princes cannot be confused with these, as it offers a different treatment of the same subject, with much larger formats.
A large part of the Les Footballeurs series was exhibited in the 2003 Nicolas de Staël retrospective at the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris, as well as the 2010 retrospective at the Fondation Gianadda, Martigny, Switzerland, which focused on works from 1945 to 1955.
One of the paintings in the series (the one in the inset) is an oil on canvas measuring 64 × 81 cm; it belongs to the Fondation Gianadda in Martigny. It is unique in that it can be located, which is not the case for all the paintings in the series. This one is an oil on canvas, the others are oils on cardboard, as indicated in the list".
The year 1952 began with a disappointing exhibition. In London at the Matthiesen Gallery, where 26 of Staël's paintings were shown, the opening was a social affair, but it was not a success.
