Gabrielle à la rose

Gabrielle à la rose is an oil painting on canvas by Auguste Renoir, painted in 1911 and now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Renoir painted Gabrielle Renard, one of his favourite models, many times in the latter part of his life. The dark-haired, tanned young woman is shown wearing an almost transparent, loose-fitting white blouse, open over her breasts against a neutral backdrop that blends in with the model's form. Gabrielle puts a rose in her hair above her left ear, and holds another dark pink rose in her right hand on the table covered with a red tablecloth. These flowers symbolise the model's youth and the mischievous voluptuousness of her flesh. Renoir had now largely moved beyond the rigorously Ingresque drawing phase of his pictorial production and, with Gabrielle à la rose, he achieved a pasty brushstroke that defined the rich body of his model, who asserted herself with a Rubens-like grandeur: "I like greasy, smooth, pasty paint, I like to touch a painting, to pass my hand over it", he said. Gabrielle à la rose is, in fact, one of the highest expressions of Renoir's very late maturity, a period often neglected by art anthologies in favour of his Impressionist period. It should not be forgotten, however, that it was precisely paintings like Gabrielle à la rose, with their rich palette of full-bodied reds, that fascinated the young painters of the time, such as Henri Matisse, who often travelled to Cagnes-sur-Mer to visit the now elderly Renoir and learn his [...]
