Girl with a Red Hat

Also known as the "Lady in the Red Hat" in the 1950s. "It is in an excellent state of preservation, which Grundy attributes to the relative oblivion into which it fell until 1925: it has thus escaped restoration and cleaning. Although not all the experts consider it to be a counterpart to La Jeune Fille à la flûte, they are unanimous in believing it to be contemporary. The various chronological hypotheses reported in the notes on the Jeune Fille à la flûte are therefore valid here. Hofstede de Groot thought it had been lost. It was "rediscovered" by critics in 1925, when it was exhibited at a public auction in London. It was bought by Andrew Mellon*, who bequeathed it to the American state on his death. The painting is signed. Swillens alone asserts that it is not by Vermeer. The catalogue of the 1822 sale in Paris entitled it (wrongly, it seems) Portrait of a Young Man'; the word dame in the traditional title, which we have retained, is no more justified;". Text by Marcel Proust, documentation by Julien Segnaire. "Vermeer de Delft" published by the Galerie de la Pléiade, under the direction of André Malraux. 1952-1953. * Andrew Mellon, Mellon Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington.
