The Countess Skavronskaya is a portrait of Catherine Vassilievna Skavronskaya (en) painted by Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun in 1796.
This was the second portrait that Vigée Le Brun painted of Skavronskaya, in Saint Petersburg, after the one painted in Naples in 1790.
The portrait shows a smiling Skavronskaia, dressed in a white and blue dress, leaning on a red velvet cushion against a black background that contrasts with the warm light that seems to radiate from her face and chest and is reflected on the cushion.
For Marie-Jo Bonnet, it is an ode to feminine beauty, softness and tranquillity"; she also points out that Vigée Le Brun's painting was not seen by her contemporaries as typically feminine, but as an embodiment of grace as it was thought of in the 18th century".
The work was exhibited in St Petersburg in 1905 as part of Russian Portraits of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Since 1966, the painting has formed part of the collections of the Musée du [...]
