La Donna Velata
La Donna velata or La Velata (in French: "The Veiled Lady") is a painting by Raphael housed in the Palatine Gallery of the Pitti Palace in Florence.
La Velata takes its name from the fact that the painting depicts a veiled lady. "The person depicted in the painting appears in another portrait by Raphael, La Fornarina, and could be identified as the Fornarina ("baker") Margarita Luti, Raphael's Roman mistress. The painting is thought to date from between 1512 and 1518. Giorgio Vasari mentioned it in 1515, and the painting entered the collection of Cosimo II de' Medici in 1614. The young woman, depicted in a bust, richly dressed and wearing a veil that descends from her shoulders, hides her right arm, with only her hand emerging from the fabric, resting on her chest. Her other arm ends the painting below and to the left, and the hand is incompletely visible.
