La Présentation au temple OF Simon Vouet

The artwork
La Présentation au temple
The Presentation in the Temple is a work by the painter Simon Vouet, produced around 1640-1641 and housed in the Musée du Louvre.
On his return from Rome, Simon Vouet became court painter to Louis XIII. In 1641, Cardinal de Richelieu offered this painting to the Jesuits of Paris for the Saint-Louis church in the Jesuits' professed house on rue Saint-Antoine.
The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple is a ceremony that follows that of the Circumcision, during which the Child received the name of Jesus, from which the name Jesuit is derived. The presentation took place in the Temple of Jerusalem, where all newborn males had to be brought. Here, Vouet depicted the Temple with a colonnade similar to those he had no doubt admired during his stay in Rome.
The figure handing the Child to Mary is Simeon, who had just blessed the Child and prophesied his fate to his parents. Witnesses to the scene, including 2 angels suspended above the scene, surround them. A descending vanishing line crosses the central column directly above the Child, whose position in the painting is thus emphasised.
The upper part of the altarpiece, L'Apothéose de saint Louis, is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen.
