La Vierge Marie

The Marriage of the Virgin is an oil on canvas (110 × 83 cm) by El Greco, painted between 1613 and 1614 and kept in Romania at the National Art Museum of Romania in Bucharest. The painting is one of five executed for the main chapel of the Hospital of Our Lady of Charity in Illescas, in the province of Toledo. The other four works (The Virgin of Charity, The Annunciation, The Nativity and The Coronation of the Virgin) are now in the chapel of the Hospital of Charity in Illescas. The Marriage of the Virgin is one of El Greco's last compositions, if not his last. The scene of the Marriage of the Virgin takes place in a large draped tent. Mary is wearing a large azure blue cloak with luminous, pearly reflections. Her small, bent-over face emerges from her ample garment. Opposite her, Saint Joseph wears a green tunic and a yellow cloak with coppery tones. The high priest is dressed in white with a golden cope with silver highlights and a mitre. He is an elderly figure with a white beard who holds the joined hands of the bride and groom. Four figures are gathered around the stage, two women on the left and two men on the right. They all have ghostly faces, the old man on the right standing out for the dazzling whiteness of his hair and beard. The floor is made of black and white marble paving stones. This painting was presented to the public in Paris at the Greco retrospective at the Grand Palais, from 16 October 2019 to 10 February [...]
