L'Accueil du Grand Condé à Versailles par Louis XIV
Réception du Grand Condé à Versailles or Reception of the Grand Condé by Louis XIV is a painting by Jean-Léon Gérôme in 1878. It depicts the reception of Louis II de Bourbon-Condé by Louis XIV at Versailles, at the foot of the Staircase of the Ambassadors, in 1674. The painting was acquired by the Musée d'Orsay in 2004.
Following the lukewarm success of another of his paintings, Century of Augustus: Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ (1855 Universal Exhibition), Gérôme concentrated on "little" history. Here he highlights the comedy of power, through the prince's belated allegiance to his king. The painter's taste for reconstruction and precision can be seen in his depiction of the rich court costumes, as well as in his reproduction of the monumental Staircase of the Ambassadors at Versailles, which had been destroyed more than a century earlier.
Gérôme's painting was acquired by the Musée d'Orsay in 2004.
In 2014, the painting was loaned to the Musée des beaux-arts de Lyon as part of the exhibition L'invention du Passé. Histoires de cœur et d'épée [...]
