L'anniversaire, 1915 OF Marc Chagall
The artwork
L'anniversaire, 1915
The Birthday (Russian: ???? ????????) is a painting created in 1915 by the Russian-born, Belarusian naturalized French painter Marc Chagall. It is kept and exhibited at the MOMA in New York, USA. In 1914, Chagall returned to Vitebsk from Paris. In 1915, he married Bella Rosenfeld, the model for the painting.
According to MGU historian Maria Berezanskaya, around the couple's aerial kiss, the painting takes us back to a number of meticulously rendered domestic details. Each carries a hidden meaning, transforming this ordinary room in the city into a place where the miracle of the lovers' flight takes place before our very eyes. The material details are important because they form the link between the real and the fabulous. Hasidic culture had become for Chagall a creative cradle that made him perceive the domestic environment as a very important part of human life. The elevation of subjects from everyday popular life, in the mythological spirit of this suspended flight, brings Chagall's painting and graphics closer to the solemn yet simple art of Niko Pirosmani. The sacralisation of the acts of daily life is found in the characteristics of the lives of the ancient biblical patriarchs in the late work of Rembrandt. It is a fundamental task for Chagall to depict a multitude of objects in minute detail, but in a chaotic universe that ultimately appears paradoxically as a unity.
