Le violoniste, 1911-1914 OF Marc Chagall
The artwork
Le violoniste, 1911-1914
The Violinist is a painting (188x158 cm) created between 1912 and 1913 by the painter Marc Chagall.
It is kept at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
The picture depicts a violinist on top of a house. The violinist represents the condition of the Jews in the world: an unstable life like that of the musician who has to balance on a roof. The painting was produced in Paris in the studio of La Ruche, at a time when the artist often suffered from hunger and lack of materials: proof of this is that the work was produced on a common tablecloth, the decoration of which is visible in the shaded part of the main figure.
