Le berceau
Le Berceau (The Cradle) was painted by Berthe Morisot in 1872. This oil on canvas depicts a young woman looking after an infant in a cradle. It is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
In 1868, when observing two young women painting with Henri Fantin-Latour in Ville-d'Avray, Édouard Manet is said to have confided to the latter: "I agree with you, the young ladies are charming. It is unfortunate that they are not men"; however, as women, they could serve the cause of painting by each marrying an academician".
The two young women in question were Berthe Morisot and one of her sisters, a few years her senior, Edma. Edma Morisot stopped painting after her marriage to Adolphe Pontillon. Berthe Morisot continued and was noticed for her talent.
In this work by Berthe Morisot, The Cradle, it is Edma who serves as her model (as in several other works) for the mother perched on her child. The child is Edma's daughter and Berthe Morisot's niece, Blanche Pontillon. The painting, measuring 56 x 46 cm, was produced in 1872.
It was shown at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. It was not the most talked-about or talked-about painting, but it was well received by the critics who reviewed it. Some remarks, however, were imbued with a profound sexism, such as this comment by the journalist Albert Wolff: "There is also a woman in the group, as in all the famous gangs", he wrote, "her name is Berthe Morisot. In her, feminine grace is maintained in the midst of the outbursts of a delirious [...]
