Le Chevalier aux fleurs is a painting by Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse in 1894. It is kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
The painting depicts the moment when Parsifal, a chaste hero whose destiny is to regain the Holy Grail, has just overpowered the guards of the magician Klingsor's castle. He wanders off into the enchanted garden, deaf to the calls of the flower maidens, femmes fatales with bodies barely covered in flowers.
The girls surround the young man to compete for his favours, but he finally decides to turn them away. Kundry, who obeys the magician's orders, sends the flower maidens away and in turn uses her charm to try to win him over.
One of the most important themes in Wagner's opera Parsifal is the struggle between flesh and spirit: the magician Klingsor, unable to resist his impulses, has castrated himself, and his obsession is to lead the Knights of the Grail to their doom, through the intermediary of the flower maidens, the [...]
