Le Christ bénissant

The Blessing Christ (Italian: Cristo benedicente) is a religious painting by Giovanni Bellini. The painting is currently on display at the Musée du Louvre. The painting was found in the Convent of Santo Stefano in Venice, perhaps as a gift from its creator. It was first owned by Prince Orlov and then by the art dealer François Kleinberger, before being bequeathed to the Musée du Louvre in 1912. The Blessing Christ is a figure from traditional Christian iconography: Jesus, standing or in bust form, raises his right hand with two fingers, as a sign of blessing for those present or, more generally, for the world. Christ is depicted in a bust, facing slightly to the left of the painting, with his head bent over"; he is dressed in a white chasuble with gold festoons; his stigmata are visible in the hollows of his hands, the right of which is raised, two fingers held up as a sign of blessing". Another of his stigmata is visible, that of the wound in his right flank, through an opening in his garment"; the crown of thorns encircles his forehead and rays radiate from his head on the top and sides, but without the form of a halo". In his left hand, Christ is carrying a book with its clasp. A landscape fills the background of the composition, showing hills to the right and left and buildings (towers, bell towers?) only to the left. A winding path carries two figures, one red and one white, towards the buildings. The upper sky is filled with clouds, ranging from light to dark [...]
