Le dessert de gaufrettes

Still Life with Wafers, more commonly known as Le Dessert de gaufrettes, or Le Plat de gaufrettes, is a work by the painter Lubin Baugin, painted between 1630 and 1635 and now in the Musée du Louvre. The painting is divided into four main sections. A completely black background serving as a backdrop for the bottle and the glass, a stone wall closing off the background on the left, the large light-coloured tablecloth, complementary to the red of the glass and the yellow of the bottle, and the front of the table above which the plate of wafers stands. The wafers are carefully arranged on a metal plate, which moves towards the viewer as if in offering. A richly embellished glass of wine contrasts with the rusticity of the bottle. The scene is immersed in a complex play of light and shadow. It is signed in capitals "BAVGIN" on the tablecloth in the bottom right-hand corner. The painting shows three objects on a table cut off to the left of the frame, covered with a blue tablecloth and occupying just under the lower half of the painting: a pewter dish garnished with seven wafers - or forget-me-nots -, a stoppered flask covered with wicker - woven rush? - and a chased crystal glass half-filled with garnet wine. According to the shadows cast by the glass and the flask, the light is coming from an (unidentifiable) source in front of the painting, on the left, approximately level with the table. The background is blocked by an ashlar wall with a recess into which the glass bowl fits [...]
