Le Jugement de Pâris
The Judgement of Paris was a drawing by the Italian painter Raphael Sanzio, which has been lost, but is known through burin engravings by Marcantonio Raimondi.
The theme is one of the most represented in the history of art, being depicted by painters from different periods such as the Renaissance and Baroque or by 20th century painters. In fact, the lost masterpiece by Urbino was partly based on a Roman sarcophagus on this theme. The scene depicted several figurative groups immersed in a rural landscape full of trees. In the centre was the most important group, the one with Paris and the three goddesses.
Paris was handing Venus the apple of discord while the goddess of love was crowned by a winged Victory. At her feet was her son Cupid, while next to Paris stood the messenger of the gods, Mercury. The goddess Juno, recognisable by the peacock at her feet, seemed caught in the act of threatening the Trojan prince. Minerva grasped the dress she had stripped herself of to clothe herself, while the helmet and shield with Medusa's head lay on the ground. To the right was a group of river gods, one of whom was looking at the spectator, while another looked up and saw the god Jupiter in the clouds, seated on a throne. In the centre the Dioscuri pulled the chariot of the Sun.
Raimondi's print derives from a drawing that Raphael himself made for the engraving translation. According to art historian Giorgio Vasari, this work 'amazed the whole of Rome', allowing copies and [...]
