Le pont d'Argenteuil

Le Pont d'Argenteuil (The Bridge at Argenteuil) was painted by Claude Monet in 1874 and presented to the public at the second Impressionist exhibition in 1876. Oil on canvas, 60 by 80 cm, signed and dated lower right: Claude Monet 74. The painting depicts the banks of the Seine at the foot of the Argenteuil road bridge, linking Gennevilliers to Argenteuil, as seen from the Quai du Petit-Gennevilliers. When the work began, a temporary wooden footbridge, pictured by Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley in 1872, replaced the old bridge. In the painting, the arches of the new bridge can be seen, with the two towers of the toll plaza in the background. To the left, the trees are the elms of the Quinconces d'Argenteuil, a wooded area between the Seine and the Quai de Seine that would become the Boulevard Héloïse. The big house in the middle of the trees is a hotel-restaurant." On the night of 6 October 2007 to [...]
