Le Pont du Gard

The Pont du Gard is a painting in the series Principaux Monuments de la France by the ruin painter Hubert Robert on the remains of Gaul, a large oil painting intended to decorate a salon at the Château de Fontainebleau. For a time, only Le Pont du Gard occupied the planned location for the complete series, commissioned in 1786 and completed in 1787, and became the property of King Louis XVI and the Crown of France.
