Leonardo da Vinci's Saint Jerome in the Wilderness

Saint Jerome is a painting by Leonardo da Vinci. The painting was never completed, but is dated to approximately 1482. It was painted in oil and tempera on a walnut panel. One of the great advantages of this unfinished work is that it allows us to analyse Leonardo's way of painting. We can see the finger painting process: pigments applied with the fingertips to soften the sharp contours of the figures (sfumato). There are also traces of wiping and pad painting, elements that would not appear in a finished painting. Its early history is not known. The painting first appeared in the eighteenth century in the collection of the painter Angelica Kauffmann. After her death in Rome in 1807, the painting was cut into planks by craftsmen who incorporated them into furniture (one plank was used as the seat of a stool!). Infrared reflectography confirms that the painting was cut into several pieces. However, one of them is centred on the saint's head, which may indicate an artistic rather than a utilitarian intention. Most of the pieces have been recovered and reunited, with the exception of a very small triangle. The painting then entered the immense collection of Napoleon Bonaparte's uncle, Cardinal Fesch, which included more than 16,000 paintings. After the cardinal's death in his palace in Rome in 1839, most of his collection was put up for sale to raise funds for the Bonaparte family, in accordance with his wishes.
