The Shadows of Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta Appear to Dante and Virgil is a subject painted in several versions by Ary Scheffer, all in oil on canvas. It depicts a scene from Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, where Dante and Virgil see Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta in Hell. This painting is considered Scheffer's masterpiece. In the first volume of the Divine Comedy, Inferno, Dante and Virgil meet Francesca and her lover Paolo in the second circle of Hell, reserved for those guilty of lust. There the couple are trapped in an eternal whirlpool, damned to be tossed around forever for indulging their passions. Dante calls them and speaks to Francesca: she indirectly gives some details of her life and death"; Dante, apparently familiar with the story, correctly identifies her by name. He asks her what led them to damnation, and her story touches Dante so deeply that he faints with pity. Francesca and Paolo's love affair and their damnation in Hell were the subject of numerous artistic representations in the 19th century". Like other artists such as William Powell Frith, Scheffer developed the habit of repeating his most successful paintings in smaller versions later in his life, not least because his later works were not very successful and he lost his role as a court painter after the French Revolution of 1848.
