L'Impératrice Eugénie entourée de ses dames d'honneur (Empress Eugenie surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting) was painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter in 1855 and is now in the Château de Compiègne. Commissioned by Eugénie de Montijo, it is one of the most famous paintings by the German portrait painter. The painting was commissioned by Empress Eugénie de Montijo to be exhibited at the Salon de Peinture at the 1855 Universal Exhibition, which opened in May. The painting was intended to depict the sovereign in the midst of her ladies-in-waiting, who took turns around her throughout the week. There were 10 of them when the painter made his first sketch. However, the seventh lady of the palace, Léonie Bugeaud de la Piconnerie d'Isly, Comtesse de Feray (daughter of Marshal Bugeaud), resigned in January 1855, forcing the painter to completely rethink the composition of the painting in just a few weeks. With the help of his studio, he managed to complete it in four months, ready for the opening of the exhibition. The reception of the painting was mixed. Parisian critics were quick to point out that the painting looked slapdash, and criticised him for being too interested in the details of the dresses rather than the characters. However, it was a great success with the general public and in imperial court circles, as the painting symbolised the splendour of the new regime.
