Ludovic Halévy and Albert Boulanger-Cavé backstage at the Opéra is a pastel and tempera drawing produced on paper in 1879 by the French painter Edgar Degas.
It is kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
The drawing measures 79 cm high by 55 cm wide and is signed "Degas" in the lower left-hand corner. It depicts two of his friends, the librettist Ludovic Halévy and his friend Albert Boulanger-Cavé (1832-1910), theatre supervisor at the Ministry of the Interior under the Second Empire, "as if emerging from a scenery carrier" in the wings of the Paris Opera.
Edgar Degas gave it to one of the models, Ludovic Halévy, around 1885"; the work remained in the family until 1958. At that time, it was donated by Madame Halévy, the widow of Élie Halévy, to the French state, which donated it to the Musée du Louvre. In 1964, the drawing was transferred to the Musée [...]
