Manga

The Hokusai manga (????, Sketchbooks by Hokusai?) are a collection of sketches of many different subjects by the Japanese artist Hokusai. The subjects of these sketches include landscapes, flora and fauna, everyday life, as well as the supernatural. The word "manga" in the title does not refer to "manga" as we know it today, as the various sketches in these notebooks do not form a story, but deal with separate subjects. Hokusai manga are prints (woodcuts) in three colours (black, grey and flesh). There are thousands of them, divided into 15 notebooks"; the first was published in 1814, when the artist was 55. The last three volumes were published posthumously, two of them having been put together by the publisher from previously unpublished documents. The very last volume, on the other hand, was formed from previously published works, some of which were not even by Hokusai; it is not considered authentic by art historians." The final volume is considered apocryphal by some art historians. The preface to the first volume of the work, written by Hanshu Sanjin (?????), a minor artist from Nagoya, suggests that the publication of the work may have enlisted the help of Hokusai's pupils. Part of the preface reads: " It is generally considered that, after a period of intense production, Hokusai selected his sketches very carefully, and even redrew a number of them, arranging them in the order we know today.
