On the Beach at Trouville OF Claude Monet
The artwork
On the Beach at Trouville
Trouville Beach is a painting by Claude Monet. Executed in 1870, it is kept at the National Gallery in London.
It is a rather atypical composition, with the figures depicted very closely, which may indicate that the painting began as a sketch for a larger composition. The woman on the left could be Camille, the painter's wife, while the other appears to be the wife of the painter Eugène Boudin, whose beach scenes certainly had an influence on Monet's work.
From a chromatic point of view, the painting is characterised by a strong contrast between the white dresses in full light and the faces in shadow. A few grains of sand in the oil layer on the canvas show that the work was actually painted in the open air.
