Pacific Sunset
The Country Concert is a painting from around 1509, now in the collections of the Paintings Department of the Musée du Louvre.
The work first belonged to the Gonzagas, and in particular to Isabella d'Este. It then went to Charles I of England and then to the French banker Everhard Jabach. Finally, Louis XIV of France took it to the Louvre Palace in 1671. The composer Gustav Mahler owned a reproduction in the music room in Hamburg where he was a conductor (quoted by Henry Louis de La Grange in his autobiography of the musician).
Alfred de Musset also acquired a copy of the painting.., The reproduction of this painting (which he believed to be by Giorgione) offered the poet, who at the time was often a recluse, unwell and sullen, and who was also obliged to observe thrifty domestic habits, an opportunity to rejoice at little cost through the possession of this work, and he also found in the free contemplation of this painting, which he was particularly fond of, a great distraction from the physical and moral ills that used to plague him and usually kept him in his Parisian attic.
Two young men are sitting in a hilly landscape. The man dressed in a red suit with puffed sleeves is playing a lute while his companion dressed in a green tunic is leaning towards him.
They are accompanied by two women whose togas have fallen off, leaving them largely naked. The woman on the left is standing, pouring water into a marble basin. The other woman, seated, is playing the flute.
