Philosophe en méditation

The Philosopher in Meditation is a painting in the Musée du Louvre by the Dutch master Rembrandt (Leiden 1606-Amsterdam 1669), dating from 1632. Philosopher in Meditation (Bredius 431) is the traditional but apocryphal title of the painting. As the earliest known source, a 1738 sales catalogue, suggests, the original subject is probably "Tobias and Anna awaiting the return of their son" (see The subject below). The panel is signed "RHL-van Rijn" and dated 1632, around the time when the artist left his native Leiden to settle in Amsterdam. The painting appeared on the Paris art market in the mid-eighteenth century, and made its way through the great aristocratic collections (including those of the Duc de Choiseul and the Comte de Vence) before being acquired for the royal collections in 1784 and entering the Louvre palace. The supposedly 'philosophical' subject, the finely grained treatment of chiaroscuro and the masterly conception of the composition have always been appreciated, and the painting is mentioned in the writings of many great literary figures of the 19th and 20th centuries, including George Sand, Théophile Gautier, Jules Michelet, Marcel Proust, Paul Valéry, Gaston Bachelard, Paul Claudel, Aldous Huxley and Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz. Painted on an oak panel measuring 28 × 34 cm, this painting shows two figures in slightly accelerated perspective in a partially vaulted interior dominated by a spiral staircase depicted in one flight.
