Port de mer au soleil levant
Le Port de mer au soleil couchant is a work by the painter Claude Gellée, known as le Lorrain, painted in 1639 and since 1693 in the royal collections and then the Louvre. In 2016 it will be on display in the Richelieu Pavilion, 2nd floor, room 15.
Le Port de mer au soleil couchant was painted in 1639 in parallel with another work, La Fête villageoise, its counterpart, both for Pope Urban VIII.
However, the version in the Louvre does not correspond to this initial work. In fact, the painting in the Louvre was probably painted for a French art lover because the Barberini bees seen in the first version, painted for Pope Urban VIII two years earlier, were replaced by fleurs-de-lys on the ships' flags. This version of Port de mer au soleil couchant avec les fleurs de lys belonged a few years later to Le Nôtre, who donated it to Louis XIV's royal collections in 1693.
Port de mer au soleil couchant is a medium-sized painting (103x137cm), smaller than most of Le Lorrain's works.
The theme of the "Seaport" is one that Claude treated most often, particularly during his first period, between 1630 and 1645. The sea is generally framed on one side by ruins or a row of antique-style palaces, while on the other, ships are shown against the light, close to the shore, which is usually represented by a horizontal strip of land animated by figures of strollers, sailors or porters.
