The artwork
Portrait de Rosa Bonheur avec son chien Charly.
Rosa Bonheur is the title of a portrait of Rosa Bonheur painted in 1898 by Anna Elizabeth Klumpke. The portrait of the French artist Rosa Bonheur has been in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1922.
Rosa Bonheur was an artist whom Klumpke had "admired for a long time". The two artists had been corresponding since 1889. After a conversation with members of the Douglas Miller family, Klumpke decided to ask for a portrait of Rosa Bonheur. On 14 September 1897, Klumpke wrote to Bonheur to ask if she would pose for her. On 31 March 1898, Bonheur replied: "I am at your disposal, dear Miss, for the portrait".
Kumpke began work on the portrait in oil on canvas in June 1898. Klumpke wrote that she was "delighted that Rosa Bonheur has willingly offered to pose in women's clothes". Bonheur did not pose for Klumpke every day, claiming that she "couldn't stand the long sessions". When she did pose for Klumpke, the two artists talked about art and literature, told stories and discussed religion and morality. Klumpke's portrait work was also somewhat supervised by Rosa Bonheur, who wanted the young artist to follow her suggestions on sketches and works of art. Maria Tamboukou writes that the interplay of conversation and sessions during the making of the painting shows that Rosa Bonheur was "a woman in love" with Klumpke.
